Marching Mavs Here to Stay!

With the recent announcement that UNO will be moving to Division I and dropping its wrestling and football programs, the question remained: "What about the Marching Band?" Well, I am pleased to announce that the band WILL PLAY ON!

Subject: UNO Marching Mavs 2011

Spread the word that we WILL have a marching band at UNO. We already have several performances lined up for the season and are brainstorming some great new ideas to make this band work with a new agenda in mind. We will be more of an exhibition band learning one or two shows to perform in the community and on campus. Also, we will serve as a lab band for music education students as well as student leaders to really hone their teaching skills.

I truly believe this change is a REALLY GOOD thing for our university, band and music program. I really hope you will join us again next year. Here is some important information:

Band Camp: August 15-19th. 8-5pm.
Rehearsal Schedule: MWF from 7:30-8:50pm. Yep, that's right--JUST 3 days/week!!! (if you plan to participate in UBand, we will meet all semester and will also be adjusting our purpose to better serve the university and music program) UBand will meet TR from 8-8:50pm

Section Leader auditions/interviews: Last week of classes (please sign up at Dr. Snyder's office)
Drum Major auditions (directing only as we won't have a pregame show to learn so no twirling necessary), 1:30pm in 109 on Friday, April 29th.

I will send out another email shortly with drumline and colorguard information on it, but just wanted to make sure you were fully aware that we WILL have marching band at UNO!!!

I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. As many of you have heard by now, 2010 was my final season with the Marching Mavericks. As I look back not only on the 2010 season, but on my last 7 years with the Marching Mavericks, I have several fond memories.

Some examples:

It's not everyday you go from having no experience in a marching band to performing for the President of the United States.
Watching my section leader dance and sing "The Devil Went Down to Georgia"
The Looney Tunes Show (2005)
Helping to design brand new uniforms for the band.
The Video Game Show (2008)
The Guitar Hero Show (2010)
And Many More!

And now a major announcement: After 6 years with the Marching Mavericks, this was my final year, as I am going to be moving to Wisconsin next Summer. I will continue updating with pictures from this season and then posting the photos of my favorite memories from Marching Band over the last 6 years.

I would like to thank all of the Marching Mavericks, as well as Dr Saker, Dr. Neidlinger, P-Mac (Professor McCaskill) and Dr. Snyder for 6 years of wonderful memories.

First Look at the 2010 Marching Mavericks

Well, folks, the 2010 Marching Season is finally here, and with it, a 75-member Marching Band. This year promises to be an exciting one, with a Guitar Hero show utilizing UNO's new DJ Sokol Vision screen. The first game is Saturday, September 4th against UNK. The UNK Pride of the Plains Marching Band will be visiting.

Congrats to the UNO Basketball teams for their impressive wins over Pitt State Wednesday night. It was a fun game to watch and it was a blast to be able to do the YMCA with the band. Here's a pic from the game:

Well, it's now official! The Marching Mavericks will join the UNO Football team as we play at the Kanza Bowl at Topeka Kansas. The Itinerary can be found on Blackboard as well as a roster for who all is attending. We will leave and arrive on Saturday, December 5th.

Kansas Road Trip Day 2

Well, we're back home! We got home 15 minutes early (9:15PM Saturday) and what a trip it was. The Mavs won the game, and the band had an awesome time. Here is a small sample of the photos I took.

Kansas Road Trip-Day 1

Greetings from Kansas! We had a full day today, and it was really exciting. We left UNO just a little before 3PM, and made our way to Hiawatha High School in Hiawatha, KS. After we performed for their halftime show, we packed up and made our way to Topeka, where we are now bunked up for the night. I'll have some photos from the trip up on Sunday. We expect to arrive back in Omaha around 9:30PM tomorrow night.

Sorry for not updating the blog as frequently as I have done in the past. Lots of things have been going on. Due to this fact, in lieu of the Meet The Marching Mavs videos I have done in the past, I will be making one big Behind the scenes video around the end of the season. This video will showcase a typical game day from rehearsal through the end of the football game, as well as show some of the funnier sides of the band.

Will be taking plenty of photos and video tomorrow.

Season Update

Sorry it's been so long since I updated. Things have been going crazy in a lot of areas. Anyway, a lot of things have changed for the better with Dr. Snyder in command. Here are just a few:

At the end of rehearsal, we play the fight song, do a run-on in the huddle and do our mantra.
At home games, we are now situated in the bleachers behind the north end-zone.
New Staff Shirts (YAY!)

Personally I enjoy these changes and look forward to working with Dr. Snyder in the weeks and months ahead.

The season kicked off with an amazing 48-0 victory against East Central Oklahoma. Congrats to the team, and keep it going guys!

This Saturday, we wheel up and head to Kearney for the traditional UNO-UNK game. Band members are to report to Strauss at 4AM Saturday to load up equipment! Kickoff for the game is at noon!

Band Camp Recap

Well, luckily, I saved everything on a backup hard drive, so when my computer crashed, I didn't lose anything. One thing I thought WAS lost forever was the poem I wrote for April. However, thanks to the Facebook group created in her memory, the poem will be preserved for all time.

Band Camp was very productive and all the band members worked very hard (despite an intense rain shower that quickly came and went). I'll have pictures from band camp as well as the performance at Omaha South High School sometime this week.

Also, I have to commend Dr. Snyder for her innovative ideas. The ALL-NEW pre-game we will debut this year is AWESOME, it's fresh, and it will be a crowd-pleaser. We have also added a second fight song called "UNO Go Fight!" it will supplement the current fight song, "UNO Fight".

Our first home game is this Thursday, August 27th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00PM, but be at the stadium by 6 if you want to catch our ALL-NEW pre-game.

Band Camp Day 2: Raising The Bar

Today we continued at an awesome pace. Just about everything was done at the practice field on South Campus. When we moved inside for music rehearsal, we started work on more pre-game music as well as started reading the music for our first halftime show: The Beatles. When we got to Hey Jude, which we played last year in memory of April, I couldn't hold back the emotion. We have decided to once again perform Hey Jude, this time at halftime, and once again, dedicated to April.

Tomorrow, we will be working on a lot more stuff, and the section leaders will perform at the Faculty Picnic. After lunch, we will be moving into our home, the stadium for the first time.

Also, once again, I will be doing the article about the band's Eagle Scouts. We have a record number this year: 12 (including me and Nick Sondag). The group photo will be taken at the first home game.

Band Camp Day 1: Making School History

The 2009 Marching Mavs Met for the first time. Among them are 2 twirlers and 13 Eagle Scouts. I will have pictures up later this week of the first half of the week. Our first OFFICIAL performance (in full Uniform) is this Sunday at Omaha South High School where we will perform for the dedication of their new stadium.

Tomorrow, we will have part assignments, more marching and music rehearsals and uniform fittings.

Wednesday, we will enter the stadium for the first time, as well as perform at the Faculty Picnic. We will also start charted marching rehearsals for our ALL-NEW pregame show. Wednesday night after camp, Lazer Tag will be played INSIDE the Strauss Performing Arts Center. Nick Sondag and I will be teaming up to capture photos and video.

Thursday, in addition to the rehearsals, we will be performing at Durango Days.

Friday is dedicated mostly to marching rehearsal for Pregame, which is what will be performed at Omaha South on Sunday. Camp ends at 4, with a DANCE PARTY that evening.

We have an awesome season ahead. GO MAVS!!

We will be performing at the Opening Ceremony for Omaha South High School's new football stadium the evening of Sunday, August 23rd. Well, after a very productive meeting with Dr. Snyder, I am going to continue on as the band's Undergraduate Assistant. I am very honored and excited to continue in this role in my 5th year with the band.

The Back to Band BBQ will be held on Sunday, August 16th at 4:00PM In Elmwood Park. Come meet new and old friends, as well as have food and fun.

Also, Band Camp Starts on Monday, August 17th at 8:00AM. We meet in Room 109 in the Strauss Building.

If you haven't registered for Marching Band yet, do so ASAP!!!

It was a year ago this month that we lost April Bishop, a Marching Mavericks Alum who died tragically at the age of 21. We miss you so much April. Thanks for the memories.

The Tuba video is FINALLY completed. However, before I post it, I will be doing some testing on it. Also, fall 2009 will be a BIG year for the blog. I am hoping to develop it from just another blog to a full-blown one-stop website with all the information about the Marching Mavs. I will be doing research over the next few months to determine the best method of doing this.

I am so excited, folks! At the last game, I recorded the Tubas for a video, but I thought that the video was not going to be able to be used, but thanks to a new piece of software, I was able to modify the video so that the voices could be heard! So, coming soon, I will be releasing the next episode of Meet the 2008 Marching Mavericks: "Meet The Tubas!" This video will give you a preview of the videos for 2009! Also, I'm going to begin work on another Year In Review Video! These projects are going to be a lot of fun to work on, and even more fun to display! So, with that, I will see you soon! 2008: Year In Review

Thanks to a new piece of equipment I received as a gift, the band blog will be going Hi-Def in 2009!Wishing everyone a Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! I am going to take this opportunity to take a look back at 2008. Selected photos courtesy of Nick Sondag and Rusty Quebedeaux.

2008 started off on a very tragic note with the loss of one of our most beloved alumni April Bishop in late June. Several generations of Marching Mavericks came together as one to support one another and the Bishop family. The 2008 Marching Band t-shirts bore her initials on the sleeve:

August 18-22, 2008: The 2008 Marching Mavericks came together for the first time to kick off band camp. A lot of fun was had by all, including the traditional Menthos/Diet Coke fountain, a spirited game of kickball, "Whose Line is it Anyway: The Marching Band Edition!", the traditional faculty picnic and fieldhouse performances and a post band camp dance and party. By the end of the week, the entire band was ready to go.

First up was a joint show with the UNK Pride of the Plains Marching Band. Each band fielded their own song, and then both bands took the field and performed "America the Beautiful" together. The bands performed beautifully and the performance was absolutely breathtaking!

September 12, 2008: 2006 UNO Tuba player Justin Reese was hit by a drunk driver on his way home from a friends house. Justin was in a coma for 3 weeks, but has since made a miraculous recovery. The band prepared a giant card for Justin and it was delivered on November 1st.

Several Alumni (and others) joined the band for a special alumni day. The halftime show comprised two of the band's favorite tunes as well as the closer for the upcoming Journey show. It was also a chance for me to pull out my trumpet and play along.

GTA Mark Diischer's video game show was a big hit! The cast of characters really stole the show! The show was used as an encore for our Road Trip. All the stops were pulled out on this show.

The costumes were made by the guard themselves with special assistance from Mellophone Section leader Robin Cromwell. Well done, ladies.....

With the video game show behind us, we had one more serious show ahead of us......the centennial show. This show brought together the best of the past along with our present. It also introduced a special pre-game event.......

Also, before the game, the band stopped at a tailgate party in the pep bowl. There, we performed and even met our youngest fan........

The game also gave us the opportunity to continue the tradition of photographing the Eagle Scouts of the band........

The band then began preps for our traditional road trip. Our stops this year: Lathrop, Missouri, and then Pittsburgh, Missouri. We decided to take the video game show on the road. It was a big hit, and gave us the opportunity to wow a high school crowd (and the opportunity for the guard to learn how NOT to use a GPS system!).

Once we got to Pitt State, the band enjoyed pizza outside.......

Toward the end of the game, the Kappas from both bands got together for a group photo........

After a nice dinner, the band headed home. The trip was a success (except for the game loss), and a fun time was had by all!

After we had settled back in from the road trip, it was time to go to work again.....

The next week, we began preparations for our final show.....Doug's Stage and Screen extravaganza. The show consisted of Robin Hood: Men In Tights , The opera Nessum Dorma, and "You Can't Stop the Beat" from Hairspray! The guard began teaching the guys the choreography for Men In Tights. And several night time dance rehearsals followed...... that week, we also got the opportunity to perform in a parade.....The John Gottschalk Day celebration. We had an awesome time, and the finale saw the band join the Sydney H.S. Band and the Air Force band and Miss America in performing "God Bless America". It was a very memorable night, and a great time was had by everyone....

The next Week was the final week. It was a bittersweet week. Preps continued for the final show, including dance rehearsals for the guys. The final week included a costume contest, a Halloween Party, and so much more. The final show was absolutely the best yet!

Justin Reese Chili Feed Benefit & Upcoming Projects

Justin's Family is having a free will chili feed benefit to help with his many medical expenses. The benefit is on Saturday December 7th. Here is the flyer for the feed with all the details I would encourage as many people as possible to attend and help Justin and his family with all his medical expenses.

I will begin working on the final 3 Meet The Marching Mavs videos after Thanksgiving. In the meantime, I will be working on an article for the Boy Scouts of America's newspaper, The Bugle, about the Eagle Scouts of the Marching Mavericks. Stay Tuned!!

MEGA RE-UPDATE: Season In Review!

Contrary to what u have seen on the blog over the last month, I had updated over that time frame, but a situation arose that forced me to protect certain parties by taking things down. Now that things have calmed down, I can re-post some of those items. First off, thank you to the Marching Mavs for a wonderful season!

A lot of things have happened over the past2 months, but a very serious event occurred right around the beginning of the season. Justin Reese, a member of the 2006 Marching Mavericks Tuba line, was struck by a drunk driver while driving in Ralston. Justin was in a coma for a month and a half. Drawing upon the power of the prayers of nearly a thousand people, as well as his own fighting spirit, Justin has not only awakened from the coma, but is making a very strong and impressive comeback. He still has a long way to go, but he can now talk and have his choice of foods, and he is slowly regaining his mobility. I have visited him on several occasions and have been very impressed by his progress each time. The doctors and nurses at Immanuel hospital have dubbed him a “Medical Miracle." At the time of this writing, Justin is preparing to leave the hospital this weekend to go home and will begin his home therapy.

As this season draws to a close, I would like to take a moment to look back at some of the more memorable events:

Week 1- Band Camp: The 2008 UNO Marching Mavericks came together on a hot August morning in room 109 in the Strauss Performing Arts Center. The band was introduced to not only it's directors and staff, but also each other. Over the course of the week, the band had to deal with not only the heat, but dive bombing bees, as well as minor instrument malfunctions. At the end of the week, the band played at the Pacific Springs Retirement Center for their tailgate party. While the band was waiting it's turn to play, P-Mac reached into a truck and turned off a Radio that was playing the Cornhusker fight song! (P-Mac originally came from Mizzou. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but hey, whatever works!)Section of the Week: The Mellophones

Week 2-UNO vs. UNK- With their uniforms officially checked out and their music all distributed, the band began work on their first halftime show- a joint performance with UNK's Pride of the Plains Marching Band. The finale of the show featured both UNO & UNK bands playing America the Beautiful. And it sure was! It was during this week that Justin was hit by the drunk driver. The section of the week: The Tenor Saxophones

Week 3- UNO vs. Emporia State AKA-The Revenge of the Alumni!- The alumni band came back to help the band with their Journey Show. I even got to get in on the action! And Alumni Andy Seberg even helped out with the Tenor Sax video :-) It was a cold week, but a lot was accomplished! Section of the Week: The Tenor Drums.

Week 4- The Rebirth of Video Games- AKA Diisch takes the reigns.

With the team on the road, the band began preparations for our video game show, music and drill arranged by GTA Mark Diischer. The show consisted of Pac-Man, Tetris, Super Mario Brothers, and The Legend of Zelda. This show would become a band favorite and would be used on the road. A lit was accomplished including the re-birth of Pac-Man. Hats off to Mark for his excellent work on this amazing show! (Oh, and we did lazer tag, too!) Section of the Week: The Clarinets

Week 5- UNO vs. NW-Missouri State- Mario & Friends Take the Field!

The finishing touches were put on the Video Game show (including the guard's costumes). A lot of choreography (including a Jam Session) was done, but in the end, the show was a lot of fun. Section of the Week: The Trumpets. Super Mario Section of the Week: The Color Guard

Week 6- The Band helps the Community

Work began on our homecoming show. After the end of the game the previous weekend. We were notified that we had been asked to play at a Muscular Dystrophy walk. So, we did that while we were in the process of preparing our next show. Section of the week: The Alto Saxophones.

Week 7- UNO vs. Missouri Western- Centennial Celebration.

This is where I cut off the blog. Part of it was that a lot was going on at the time, but the major part of it was a situation I will go into shortly. As part of our festivities, we played at a tailgate party at the pep bowl. Here are a couple cute photos from the event:

UNO won the game and a magnificent time was had by all!

Week 8: The Road Trip!

(Here's where things went crazy and forced the deletion of a lot of material.) We went to Lathrop High School in Lathrop, MO and played with their High School band. After halftime, one of the flute players and her boyfriend disappeared. We learned the following Monday that an Amber Alert had been issued, and that is when I tore down EVERYTHING related to the trip, as well as any references to Justin Reese (to protect him and his family, as well as the University from any unwanted intrusion from the media). Anyway, after the game, we performed our pre-game show and the video game show, both of which got a huge rise from the audience!

We stayed in a beautiful hotel in K.C. that night!

The following day, we traveled to Pittsburgh, KS for the UNO-Pitt State game. despite a loss from UNO, the band had an awesome time, and it was a trip to remember!

A little blunder with a GPS system made half the guard end up in the wrong Pittsburgh. We were in Pittsburgh, KS, they ended up in Pittsburgh, MO! (They made it in time to catch the second half of the game, though).

Week 9: John Gottschalk Day Event!

We began preparing for a large-scale event: a retirement party for John Gottschalk. It included a parade which we performed in with a lot of famous people, including.........

UNL Athletic Director "Coach" Tom Osborne

Nebraska Governor Dave Heinemann and his four predecessors (This photo appeared in the World-Herald and became my first published photography credit!)

And Miss America herself, who sang "God Bless America" with the UNO, Sidney High School (from Sidney, NE), and Air Force bands playing alongside!

Preps continued that week for our final show, which was arranged by Doug Babic as a hilarious send-off! Section of the Week: Cymbals!

Week 10: UNO vs. Fort Hayes State- AKA: Marching Mavs-Men In Dance & Justin Reese, Miracle Man!

The band began it's final week of preps for what would be our biggest and best show ever: a stage & screen show. The opener was Robin Hood: Men In Tights, and the best part (WAIT FOR IT...........) was when all the guys in the band (including Mark Diischer and Doug Babic went out onto the field and performed the song and dance. Here it us for your viewing pleasure

A small group of gentlemen from the band got their chance to once again capture a moment in the spotlight (actually, sunlight!). The halftime show concluded with "You Can't Stop the Beat" from Hairspray. And with that awesome halftime show, (and an impressive win by the UNO football team), the 2008 Marching Band season drew to a close!

Earlier in the week, I had received word that Justin was ready to receive visitors. The band and I prepared a card and had everyone sign it! After the final home game of the season, I delivered the card, and a poem of my own writing to him. He was glad to see me, although obviously a little exhausted from all the physical and other therapy of the week. I took a photo of us together and his family has requested that I post that here, so here it is:

It is also with great pleasure that I present to you the poem I composed in honor of Justin. Here is "Miracle Man":

Special Feature- Meet The Color Guard

Today I present Meet the Marching Mavs: Meet the Color Guard, with special guest star Pac-Man. Saturday, the Eagle Scouts of the band will be taking their photo. Photos from this event will be posted next week. Also, next Wednesday, the Mav Horns will be performing at a dodge ball game at the South Omaha YMCA. More details will be posted later.

Muscular Dystrophy Walk info

This is a very small update. Tomorrow will be a very big update. The Alto Sax Meet The Marching Mav video will be up tomorrow.The band has been invited to perform at a Muscular Dystrophy walk this Saturday. The walk will take place at Zorinsky Lake in west Omaha. Just a reminder, the game time for the NW Missouri State game this Saturday has been moved from 6PM-130pm to avoid conflicting with the Husker game. Speaking of Saturday's game, congrats to the Mavs on a HUGE 40-21 victory over Missouri Southern. Especially to Mr. Zach-Attack Miller himself. Nice job, Zach!

First of all, Band Fan t-shirts are available to order. If any parents are interested in ordering some, ask your student to bring an order form home. We would like to get as many ordered as possible so as many people as possible have a chance to own one. Also, a VERY IMPORTANT NOTE!!! Athletics has changed the time of the UNO vs. Northwest Missouri State game from 6PM to 1:30PM. Please make your plans accordingly!

Finally, preparations for our video game show are coming along very well! we're on track! A big thanks to GTA Mark Diischer for the drill and music.

Also, an update on the next Meet The Marching Mav video. The Clarinets will be split into two filming sessions because of the size of the section. The 1st Clarinets will be filmed tomorrow, and the 2nd Clarinets will be filmed on Tuesday. The video will be put together by next Friday, and I will hope to have the next Section of the week done that day as well.

I'm still going through the photos I have taken from the Alumni Band yesterday. It was a great game, and Hey Jude went very well. It was played between the 1st & 2nd quarters, and set the tone for the rest of the day. The Mavericks kicked Emporia State's butt, 41-20 (congrats, guys!). On a personal note, it was awesome to be back out there playing again. Anyway, here's the picture of the week as well as a small collection of photos from the day. The Tenor Sax video will be screened in front of the band Monday morning before being posted Monday night. The next video after them will be featuring the Clarinets.

SUPPLEMENTED- Meet the Marching Mavs- Tenor Drums & UNO-UNK reflections

With only 2 days left before the UNO-Emporia State game, I've decided to add to this post with some reflections from the UNO-UNK game:

I was very impressed with both the UNO & UNK bands. The pre-game show was very well done. At halftime, both bands showed incredible energy and intensity. Separately, they each performed very well. But the most moving part of the show was at the end when the bands joined together to perform "America the Beautiful". It was incredibly spectacular watching the two bands come together to create one beautiful sound. The incredible moments didn't stop after halftime. We had several apples that we passed out to our band, and the UNK band, and even some to the Bullpen. However, we realized we still had two whole trays left so we headed into the stands to distribute them. I was approached by a few kids and I gladly gave them apples. One dad even came up with his little boy and I handed the little guy an apple, and a smile just came across my face AND my heart. It was at that point that I found a new delight in my role as the band's undergrad assistant. There are moments that change your life forever, and that was definitely one of them. I'm looking forward to the Emporia State game and seeing the Band Buddies and Alumni band.

Congrats to UNO for their decisive win over UNK, 49-21

Ok, this has been a long time coming, but Meet A Marching Mav is now Meet THE Marching Mavs! That's right, we're gonna try and meet the WHOLE BAND in ONE SEASON! The way it works is that the staff chooses a section of the week. That section will then be videotaped by me describing their names and their favorite thing about being a Marching Mav. The first three sections have already been named, and one section's video is done: The Mellophones. The next two are the Tenor Drums and Tenor Saxes! I will try and get the two tenor sections caught up by the end of the week, and have their videos up as soon as possible. Rehearsal Photos, Kearney Game Reminder

As I mentioned earlier today, our rehearsal was productive and also educational for our band buddies. Speaking of which, here is a group photo of our band buddies with their Maverick Band Counterparts.

Also, some final details about Saturday's game. UNK's band will be arriving Saturday at noon and will join us at the stadium for a joint rehearsal. Kickoff will be at 6PM, with pre-game beginning shortly before.

Today's Rehearsal events and September 6th Show Details!

Well, a lot happened at rehearsal today. The final pages of drill were rehearsed, and the Band Buddies arrived. I'll post photos later tonight. We now have full details for our halftime show this weekend. First, the UNK band will perform their show, then we will do Separate Ways, and then the UNK band will join us for America the Beautiful. It should be a very exciting performance!

Meet A Marching Mav Season 2, Episode 1- Jon Morin

Pic of the Week and Much More!

Where do I start? This has to be the BIGGEST update I've ever done. Well, I'd better start with the basics.

Rehearsals: Tomorrow, we begin rehearsals. Rehearsals are Monday through Friday 7:30AM-8:50AM. If sectionals are needed, they will be held at 7:00AM. Drumline is to report at 7AM. If sectionals are not needed, section leaders will report at 7:15.

Upcoming Show:
Our first show of the Season is the music of Journey. It will be performed at the UNO-UNK game on Sept 6. We will be having 1 week from this upcoming Saturday to prepare it. Also, pre-game is coming along very well.

Band Camp Summary:
Now time for the meat and potatoes. Band camp wrapped up on Friday. Thanks to the hard work of everyone, a lot was accomplished. Pre-game is half done, and we will soon begin working on the drill for the Journey show. We also performed at the faculty picnic, had plenty of after camp events, such as kickball, a game night, and a dance party. We also got a few special visitors such as Michael Beard (pictured below). Alumni Day:

Band Camp Days 4 & 5- Wrapping It Up

Well, folks, band camp has drawn to a close, and now we begin the regular season. The group has come together magnificently and we are ready to continue our successful season. A lot was accomplished over the last two days. Durango days also went very well yesterday, and we even taught the new UNO the importance of the fight song. All in all, it was very successful. Sunday, I will have photos from Durango Days, the final days of camp, as well as our upcoming visit to the Pacific Springs Village. Also, I will have the pic of the week. As a reminder to everyone, regular rehearsals begin Monday with downbeat 7:30am, 7:00am if you have sectionals.

Band Camp Day 3- Who's Band Is It Anyway?

There's really only one word that can describe today- Band-Tastic! The students worked so hard and their efforts are paying off! This morning, we started at South Campus and started working on the drill for pre-game. After lunch (and struggling to find a parking spot!), we went to the Stadium where we first went into the stands. After setting the group into their spots, we got everyone in and took a group photo!

Afterwards, we worked in the stadium on pre-game. A couple football players became our audience. After that, we went inside for music rehearsal. After working the Journey show music, we decided to have some fun and taught the new people the lighter side of the band in the form of The Beer Song (AKA In Heaven There Is No Beer), Vader, The kickoff sequence, and more! Tomorrow we have pretty much the same schedule. More work on pre-game will be done. The Section Leaders and drumline will perform at Durango Days tomorrow as well as at Pacific Springs on Saturday. As I mentioned before, the trumpets have added a dance to Low Rider. Here it is inside Room 109 in Strauss! (This one is for you, MavMom!)

Also tonight, the band had a game night! Our main event was a spirited rendition of "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" I will post some snippets tomorrow. Also next week, I will begin planning the first "Meet A Marching Mav" segment for this season! Some exciting events coming up!

Band Camp-Day 1 & 2-We're Back!!!!

Well, folks, the 2008 Marching Season is officially underway. I have assumed the position of Undergraduate Assistant, a position that comes with many responsibilities including the blog. The 2008 Marching Season is going to be a good one! In addition to our regular football Schedule, we are doing two community outreach performances. The first is this Saturday from 2-3PM at the Village Springs Retirement Center. The second is at a World-Herald event on Friday Evening, October 24th.

Our road game this year is at Pitt State in Pittsburgh, Kansas. Monday, we began learning music, and began Marching Fundamentals. We had our first performance, after only being together 3 hours at the Faculty Picnic. In the Afternoon, we moved to South Campus for our first marching rehearsal. It went well.

Today, Tuesday, we started in sectionals and then the band split and the Brass went to Part Assignments and the Woodwinds went to Marching Rehearsals. A creative dance by the trumpets was added to Low Rider!

Tomorrow Night after camp, we will be going bowling!

Back to Band BBQ!

Ok, everyone, this is it! Sunday night, from 6-9PM, we will be having the back to band BBQ. It is in Elmwood Park and is Sponsored by Kappa Kappa Psi. Bring your appetite as ribs will be served, and a good time will be had by all!

This is a good chance to meet our new members (including our new Drumline GTA), as well as see our returning veterans! Again, see below for things to bring to camp on Monday! These items are VERY important, especially WATER and SUNSCREEN!

Hang on to your hats, Marching Mav Fans! The kickoff for the 2008 Marching Band Season is only 3 DAYS AWAY! That's right, only 3 Days! A few notes:

Bring the following essential items to camp:
A. Your Instrument (school instruments will be provided as needed.)
B. Pencil- A must have! You will need it to mark your music and drill charts
C. Sunblock- It will be VERY HOT outside during marching drills, especially in the stadium, so make sure you are protected.
D. Water bottle- It is very important to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather. Water will be provided, but an individual bottle or cooler is a good supplement.
E. Instrument supplies- (Valve & slide oil, cork grease, etc)- be nice to your instrument, and it will be nice to you.
F. Spending money- lunch will be on your own.

I will once again be performing the role of Undergraduate Assistant. I am looking forward to this season with great anticipation.

I will post a picture of the week on Saturday, and then Monday, the Camp Coverage begins. I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

2008 Band Camp Info

Well, folks, here we are! The start of the 2008 Marching Season is upon us! I have just received the info for the 2008 Band Camp!

Band Camp will run from August 18-22. We will start our days from 8AM-5PM. Kappa Kappa Psi is sponsoring events on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings.

Also, for those of you doing drum line:

DRUM LINE camp will take place on August 13, 14 and 15. It will run from 8 am to 5 pm on Wednesday and Thursday and 8 am to 11 am on Friday. Please bring a pair of snare sticks and/or cymbal gloves and a good pair of earplugs. Also remember that you will be spending time outside so bring sunscreen, water and a hat. You will have time off for lunch so you may want to bring money or pack a lunch.

One final note:
Don't forget to register for class!!! (we have 80 so far!) And remember, if you don't register you won't get your scholarship money or a guaranteed spot in the first show!

Well, this has been a productive week! I have some awesome outside viewer content to share with you. First though the picture of the Week:

October 1, 2005- The River City Round-Up Parade. My first performance after a month-long sidelining with Epilepsy. Behind me is Adam Huryta, a Member of the United States Army, who served our country in Iraq. We thank Adam for his Service.

Now, late last week, I received a couple awesome comments about the band. I'm going to share those with you. The first is from a member of the Bullpen (the UNO Student Section) named Christina:

"I love the Marching Band because of the people that make up the band... they are so energetic..... my friends are in the band and they love it...they "GET SILLY" at most of the games and it makes it fun...even when were losing ..GO MAVS"

The next is from one of our very own, trumpet player Rudy Semar, reflecting on his first year with the UNO Music department.:

"Looking back at my first year at UNO and playing in the music program, I honestly couldn’t have wished for a better musical experience. With the Marching Mavs I was able to travel and share music with enthusiastic high school kids out on the road, cheer for the (undefeated in the regular season) Mavericks, and have a marching band experience unlike any I’ve ever had before. I toured in the Jazz Band with Randy Brecker, played all season for the Hockey Band Powerplay and MavHorns, and got to experience my first college leadership position in U-Band. I became closer to my newfound friends in the music program than any friends I’ve ever had, and even closer to my brothers in Kappa Kappa Psi. I’ve grown as a musician, an educator, and perhaps most importantly as a person. UNO has changed my life and only for the better. I couldn’t imagine having gone to school anywhere else. The opportunities, instruction, and friendships that came out of my so far short time here have been absolutely incredible, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world."

We appreciate all the kind words. Thanks to all our parents, friends, Faculty and supporters who make this program possible.

MARCHING MAVS FIREWORKS STAND

Our fireworks stand fundraiser is booming! (pardon the pun). We are also accepting spare change at the stand to donate to April's family! If you would like to come see us, we are at the SunMart in Wahoo, NE. We are open from 10AM-10PM. Come buy some fireworks, and support UNO Bands (and the Bishop family!). Today is a very sad day for the UNO Marching Mavericks. It is with a very heavy heart that I report that this afternoon, one of our most spirited and beloved members, April Bishop, passed away. 2008 Marching Mavs News!

The first bit of news regarding the 2008 Marching Mavericks has just been revealed. The Undergraduate Student Leadership of the Marching Mavericks has been announced and I will be posting that information later this week. The 2008 Marching Season will see some interesting changes.
These include:

Each Section will have a DRILL INSTRUCTOR. This student leader will be responsible for teaching their section the drill for the current show.
The Baritones and Tubas will merge into a single section called the Bari-Tubas. They will have two section leaders and a drill instructor.
A special show will be performed for the centennial celebration and homecoming game on Saturday, October 11th.
Beginning with the fall Semester, the Mavericks will have moved to a new conference with new teams to play. UNO will still face UNK and NW Missouri State, (Both games will be played at UNO), but several new teams will join in the mix. We look forward to meeting these new teams (and their bands!)

The names of the student leaders will be announced by Friday. See ya later!

2008 Marching Mavs Director Named & Autism Program Update

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am pleased to announce that Janet McCaskill, current Interim Director of Athletic Bands, has been OFFICIALLY named the Director of Athletic Bands at UNO! Congrats to P-Mac, we have enjoyed you immensely and we look forward to another great season in the fall!

Also, applications for Section Leader and Drum Major are on the bulletin board outside the GTA office. Anyone interested in applying should turn one in ASAP!

First off, congrats to the Maverick Men's Basketball team for making it to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs. You guys have had a GREAT season, and we're very proud of you!

This week, I am very excited and proud to present a very special photo of the week.
This past Friday, a conference for music directors was held at the UNO Strauss Performing Arts Center. Among the attendees was a very special person- Dr. Erica Neidlinger, the previous director of the UNO Marching Mavericks. A group of students met up with her in the hallway and we decided to go eat lunch! We headed for Jason's Deli just down the street and a great time was had by all! Dr. Neidlinger even let her hair down a little. The photo of the week shows just what happened:

Mav Horns Wrap-Up

First off-congrats to the UNO Men's Basketball team who clinched the NCC title, making the Mavericks the FINAL NCC Champions in Men's Basketball. The Mavs now move on to the D2 Tournament with a # 5-seed. GO MAVS!!!!

The Maverick Men, despite a heartbreaking loss to Mankato, are going to be hosting the first round of the playoffs. Here are a couple special photos. Saturday was Senior Night, and the team said goodbye to Denny Johnston and Jerry Bennett. Here I am with each of them:

More photos will be coming later this week. In the meantime, I am making a major announcement: I am resuming my Autism Speaking seminar, called "Living With Autism: My Story". However, instead of presenting at UNO, I will be presenting at Babies "R" Us, my workplace. At the time of the seminar, I will have been employed with the company for one year. More details about the seminar, including contact info for the event, will be coming in late March. The date is going to be Saturday, May 24th. See ya later in the week.

Well, everyone, tomorrow's the big day! I am so looking forward to it! I will just be making some minor tweaks to the video tonight before I complete post-production and post it tomorrow night! It is looking good! The music in the background is from the movie "St. Elmo's Fire". I've never seen the movie, but the music is awesome! This is my biggest video project to date, and I hope that next semester at the end of marching season, I can produce a quality year in review video. This Sunday, I will be posting a photo from the upcoming UNO- North Dakota game. Well, see ya tomorrow night!

I am proud to bring you the trailer for my new exciting video: Marching Mavs: 2005-2007. This upcoming video takes you back from the Inaugural Parade on January 20, 2005 all the way through the end of the 2007 Marching Season! Here is the awesome trailer:

The video is on schedule and is undergoing some testing, editing, and I anticipat an on-time release! Very exciting!

Mav Horns!

Ok, everyone, here's what a lot of people (myself included) have been waiting for: Mav Horns! The band gave an awesome performance at the UNK games, and the night ended with a victory for the men and a heartbreaking defeat for the women. Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome the 2007-2008 Maverick Horns!!!

The Maverick Horns are known for their high energy, great musicianship, and the way they get the crowd involved in the game. Members are chosen by audition, however, non-music majors are welcome to audition. However, membership in the Mav Horns is NOT based on one skill- Dancing:
